The Cornerstone Baptist Church has been in
existence for some four years. However, within three years after the
organization of the Church there were only 6 or 8 people attending.
The end appeared in sight. But in October of 2004 the little band of
people persuaded Rev. James Starkes to become the Senior Pastor with
hopes and dreams of the Church’s survival.
During the year that followed, 2005, the
Church grew in attendance to more than an average of 70 people per
week. During that same year there were 42 people baptized and added
to the Church. Within the course of the year, on a high attendance
Sunday, there were 142 people who came.
At the beginning of the year of 2005 there
were no Church ministries in operation. The Church had no Bible
teachers, no worship leader, no youth activities, or children’s
program. In contrast to this set of circumstance the Church now has
all of these ministries and programs in operation.
Pastor Starkes has led the Church to be heavily involved in
financially supporting local, state, and world-wide missions
ministries. Cornerstone gave 12% of the total receipts in 2005 to
these ministries.
The Cornerstone Baptist Church is a regionally
focused Church, seeing itself as responsible to minister to the
needs of people throughout Henderson, County and beyond. Pastor
Starkes has led the Church to become a ‘Church-on-the-go’ for God.
He and the membership extend an invitation to each and everyone to
attend Cornerstone. A Church where ‘everybody is somebody’ and the
‘difference is worth the distance’!
